​Dr. Ken Austin is a dedicated educator, coach, and community leader with over 25 years of experience in education and public service. His career began in the Cobb County School District, where he taught middle school mathematics at East Cobb Middle School and started his coaching journey at Wheeler High School. Today, he serves with deep pride as a special education teacher and head coach at Douglas County High School. For Dr. Austin, teaching special education is more than a job; it’s a calling—a unique opportunity to serve the underserved and make a lasting difference in students’ lives.

Dr. Austin’s commitment to learning is matched by a strong academic background. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Fort Valley State University, a Master of Arts in Education Technology from Georgia College and State University, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of West Georgia. He also holds an Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University, as well as an Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from South Carolina State University.

Meet Ken Austin

Throughout his career, Dr. Austin has served as both a teacher and an administrator. Among his proudest moments are watching his students walk across the stage to receive their high school diplomas. He was also named a finalist for Teacher of the Year for Metro Atlanta—a testament to his impact. As a school administrator, Dr. Austin successfully launched several new initiatives, building strong buy-in from staff that led to a reduction in disciplinary referrals, greater community involvement, more school partnerships, and higher graduation rates.
His passion for student development extends beyond the classroom. As a basketball head coach, Dr. Austin has helped countless student-athletes further their education and athletic careers at the collegiate and professional levels. Known for his ability to understand and nurture each athlete’s individual strengths, he values collaboration and team vision—qualities that amplify growth and build community. Dr. Austin’s leadership approach is grounded in listening, adapting, and fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

In addition to his contributions in education, Dr. Austin is deeply committed to public service. He has served as Vice President of the Baldwin-Milledgeville NAACP, is a member of 100 Black Men of Milledgeville-Oconee, chaired the Baldwin County Board of Tax Assessors, and is a proud member of the Prince Hall Shriners. Dr. Austin moved to South Fulton in 2006 and has been a District 2 resident since 2011. He has played key behind-the-scenes roles in many community initiatives, including actively supporting the successful campaign for South Fulton’s city charter.

Today, Dr. Ken Austin stands ready to lead District 2 in the City of South Fulton. His extensive experience, academic achievements, leadership style, and dedication to service make him a respected figure in both educational and civic circles—always willing to put in the work for a brighter future.
